Hey Guys, As You Know, I Am A Keen Author. So Here Is The Very First Draft I Have Written For My Sci-Fi Book I Have Decided To Name 'Power Down'. The first Few Chapters Will Be Adiel When He Is Young And His Sister Goes To War. It's A Modern War Too, And The Time Is Set Into The Future, As Adiel Gets Older, The Power Goes Down And The Raxos Come.
Adiel, a seven year old boy dangled his feet over a tall brick wall. He watched in fascination as drunken men slammed open the bar doors, smashing glasses of vodka on the stone floor, their weapons growling and spitting metal chips. The stolen cars roared around street corners, guns firing out of the windows. He could hear the noise of ricochet and gunfire, the threatening and the torture. He watched and listened to everything around him, the shouting, the screaming, the cries of the foreign women. It was 2042 and yet another war had already started. Adiel came was a foreigner. Adiel’s mother and father died in Iraq due to terrorism when he was only two years old, he was evacuated over to England where he was adopted. He didn’t even know that his mother and father were not of his origin, even though his surname was Ortega, and his English families surname was Connars.
“Adiel!” shouted the voice of a young female, “Where were you? It’s dangerous out here, gangs are on the streets with guns, what the bloody hell do you think you’re doing dangling your feet over a wall?” she shouted. Adiel looked sad. “Look Addy, we need to get inside, I’m only shouting at you because I love you”. This puzzled Adiel but he followed her and they ran through the streets. The girl jumped over a wooden fence, she helped Adiel climb over.
A tall woman was smoking a cigarette, leaning against a rusty old shed. “Mom, do I have to tell you to get inside as well? Stop smoking!” shouted the girl.
“Vanessa, they’re only little pleasures, the wars going on, it’s just a little stress reliever” replied their Mother.
“Just get inside” said Vanessa. Holding Adiel by the hand, she barged past her mother and opened the door. The two went inside, their mother followed. Vanessa was Adiel’s older sister and his only sibling. Even though the two were from different countries, Vanessa cared for Adiel more than she cared for anyone else.
“Wow!” said Adiel. His parents had been working on digging some tunnels underground, like a mine. But instead, the tunnels lead to three rooms built with scrap metal and timber. There was a room for Adiel, a room for Vanessa and another for their mother and father. He hurried through the tunnel, there was a yellow door, printed on it the word Adiel in capital letters. Adiel tried to open it. Vanessa ran up to him,
“Ad, you have to turn the wheel to open it, see” she said, spinning it.
“Okay” replied Adiel. He turned the wheel and opened the door. Inside, there was a damp and dark room. The floor made out of mossy wood with woodlice crawling through the damp logs. The wall was made out of rusty ridged metal and the ceiling was crumbling dirt, held up with wood. Scattered over the floor were cockroaches, woodlice and beetles. Cobwebs hung from the ceiling, large spiders crawling over them. A broken, cramped and small bed was in the corner and two drawers stood next to it.
Adiel gasped, this was not the reaction he was hoping for, “I’m going to sleep... in here?” he asked. “Yes Ad, sorry” replied Vanessa. Adiel didn’t look very happy at all.
“Look, I’ll let you sleep in my room for the night, it might be slightly better.
“I’m going to take Adiel to bed, Dad” said Vanessa. Her father was sat in an old leather chair in the original shed, he was reading a newspaper, waiting for some friends to come over and play poker.
“Good idea, you take yourself to bed as well” replied her Father.
“What, why?” she groaned.
“Some mates are coming round to play some adult games” he said.
“Do you really think they’re going to race through the streets past crazy gangs, armoured with huge, chunky machine guns just to play poker?” she said.
“It’s a gambling game, everyone needs money these days” he replied, smiling,
“You can stay up and educate Adiel about the war if you like, maybe tell him a bedtime story” Vanessa nodded, but she looked worried, like there was something big that she was hiding from him.
“What’s up?” asked her father.
“Nothing” she said, turning around and running to her room with Adiel.
“I swear I saw fear in her eyes” said the Father.
“What do you expect, there’s gangs on the street” replied their Mother.
Vanessa sat on her bed, she looked quite upset. Adiel snuggled up next to her.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing, it’s just a bit scary, the war, ya know?”
“Okay”. Adiel lay down on Vanessa’s bed and pulled the stained duvet over himself. Vanessa tucked him in.
“How come your room is better than mine?” asked Adiel.
“Mum and Dad have been working on my room more than yours and even their own.
“Oh”.
“Do you want a bedtime story?”
“Oh, yeah!”
“Okay then” Vanessa took a breath,
“Once upon a time there was a young boy and his name was Adiel. He was walking through the meadow as he saw the flowers grow from the green, poppy filled meadows. There were no planes in the air, no tanks rolling over the hill. Just beautiful waterfalls, forests, flowers, green grass. No smoke in the air, a perfect, happy life”. She took a sudden breath and stopped reading. Adiel was silent. Vanessa sat up and went to walk out of the door,
“Where are you going?” asked Adiel, who was pretending to be asleep.
“Nowhere” she replied.
“Dad said that he was having friends round” said Adiel.
“I know, just, go to sleep” she whispered.
Adiel felt uncomfortable as the door slammed shut. He sneaked out of bed and put his ear against the wall. He could hear muffled talking. He grabbed his glass of milk and poured it on the floor. He held the glass up to the wall and placed his ear on it. The things he heard were shocking.
“Mum, Dad”.
“Honey, you’re meant to be with Adiel, this is a private time with friends, what on earth were you thinking”.
“Oh Laurence, let her speak will you?” That was one of Dad’s friends, it must have been because the voice sounded posh, an unfamiliar female voice.
“I’d rather your friends kind of, well, I don’t know” It was his sister, Vanessa.
“It’s alright sweetheart, we’ll leave won’t we Liz?”
“Oh yes, maybe another time Laurence”
“Don’t be ridiculous Vanessa, go to bed, now!” Adiel gasped, what if she had something important to say, she was stuttering and murmuring quietly and he could tell that she was nervous of speaking up.
“Dad, please, it’s really important”
“We should go Laurence, it’s not fair on your daughter”
“Don’t be ridiculous, you can’t go out there, you know why”
“We’ll have to” The door slammed shut.
“What have you done?” That was the loudest shout Adiel had ever heard in his entire lifetime. “They’re going to get killed out there!” There was a pause.
